Toilet Paper Epiphany!

If you've spent any time with me in the last year, you know that I've become a "good deal" seeker. I try to fine our necessities as cheaply as possible, and then buy as many as possible. One of those necessities is toilet paper. I'm just guessing here, but I bet it's a necessity at your house too! Anyway, my target price for toilet paper is $.25 a roll. I will not pay more than $.25 for a regular roll of toilet paper. If it's a double roll, then I just divide the price in 1/2 to see if it comes out to $.25 or less per regular roll. So, for the last year, I've been buying TP at my target price and feeling pretty proud of myself when I'd stumble on a good deal. I have quite a stash of TP and the main brands that I have are Angel Soft, Charmin, and Cottenelle. This weekend, I was moving my stash and took a look at the fine print. WHOA!! Not all TP is created equal!! Here's what I discovered: I'm an idiot!

OK, I'm not really an idiot, but it sure took the wind out of my sails when I realized my error.

The size of the squares of TP are all the same for all the brands. They're each roughly 4" x 4 1/2". So far, so good. BUT! The NUMBER of squares is different.

Charmin - 1 regular roll is approx. 100 ft.
Cottenelle - 1 regular roll is approx. 150 ft.
Angel Soft - 1 regular roll is approx. 172 ft. Yes! 172 ft.!!!!! And! It's even a 2-ply!

So, consider yourself informed!! Spread the word!!

A friend of mine explained to me a few years ago to look for the "Total feet" or "Total sq. ft" on toilette paper and paper towels. I couldn't believe how different they were. You think you're getting a good deal, but then it's just disguised in the actual amount they are giving you. I've found that the "total" is included on all packages I've checked, so now the "Total" is the first thing I look for. Also...Kleenex!!!

You're very smart...I know!

I am a huge Bargain Buyer, as well. And I have learned years ago that TP companies are very sneaky! I always look at the number of sq. vs. price. And I've basically tried to find good brands on sale for under $6/pkg. for the 6-12 double roll pkg. I'm a cheapy, but I've also noticed that we go through Angel Soft much faster than Cottonelle or Charmin, since it's thicker. Also, Ang.Soft and Northern seem to tear up too much for my personal preference.
I refuse to be fooled. Thanks for the advice.
One more company that I am mad at: the ICE CREAM industry! Have you noticed that many brands have decreased their volume from a true 1/2 gal. to .75 or even .65 qts??? And they put this "sale" price on it. The nerve!!

We use Scott, 1000 sheets per roll. I know it's thinner and we probally use more at a time. But, I'm sure it lasts longer. Everytime I buy other brands, Cottonelle and so on, it seems I'm always changing the roll. with Scott, it just seems to last longer. Go figure! I'm glad you are not too proud to discuss the everyday issue of t.p for the whole world to read! LOL!

Oh my, my great budgeting mentor has a flaw! LOL I'm not sure I can bear the let down.

I started using Scott1000 about a yr. & a half or so ago. I took a challenge from another budgeting friend to see how long it lasts. A 12 pack of Scott1000 lasts my family of three at least three to four months. I also really like the Walgreens brand Big Roll that you buy individually. My price limit has been .50 a roll but I'm not as experienced on great deals as you are yet! I guess that comes out to .25 with your method though since I only buy the big rolls.

One more tip I'm just now trying. When you put a new roll on, write the date on the inside of the tube. I'm writing the date on a lot of things now to give me an idea of how much to stockpile things.

I love your blog. I really loved the story about your dh & heaven in the last post too.

Honestly I never thought that much about it. Fred often goes and buys our toilet paper. And I just kinda assume it's all about the same; that it will all... come out okay in the end....ahem...
Okay, my husband's sense of humor has been rubbing off on me.
I'll try to be more lady-like in future comments. ;-)
